Accessibility Statement
Last Updated: April 2026
1. About this statement
Human(s)e is a brand and newsletter operated by Dr Alon Aviram, a sole operator based in Ontario, Canada. This statement covers the Human(s)e website at humanse.co and the Human(s)e newsletter delivered through Substack.
2. Our commitment
We believe writing about being human should be readable by as many people as possible. We are committed to making the site and the newsletter usable by people with a wide range of abilities, ensuring compliance with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), and we do not discriminate on the basis of disability.
3. Conformance target
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA across the website and the newsletter. WCAG 2.1 AA is the standard most widely used in Canada, the UK, and the United States as a reasonable-adjustment benchmark for the web.
4. Current conformance status
The site is partially conformant with WCAG 2.1 Level AA. "Partially conformant" means that most of the content meets the standard, and we are actively working on the parts that do not yet meet it.
We assess our site's accessibility through regular manual reviews and automated testing tools. We prioritise accessibility improvements alongside new content releases rather than in a single one-time audit, so this statement will be updated as the site evolves.
5. Known limitations
We want to be honest about where the site does not yet fully meet WCAG 2.1 AA.
-
Third-party Substack embeds: The newsletter signup form and any embedded Substack posts are rendered by Substack. Their accessibility depends on Substack's own code, which we do not control. We have chosen Substack because it is a strong fit for our work, and Substack itself states a commitment to accessibility, but embedded elements may occasionally fall short of AA on specific checkpoints.
-
Third-party video: Videos embedded from external platforms (such as YouTube or Vimeo) use those platforms' players. Captions depend on the source file. We add captions to videos we produce. Older third-party videos may not have captions.
-
Older PDFs: Some PDF files published before this statement was adopted may not be fully tagged or screen-reader optimised. If you need an accessible version of a specific PDF, please contact us and we will provide one.
6. Feedback and how to reach us
If you run into an accessibility barrier on our site or in our newsletter, please tell us. Your feedback helps us fix things.

-
A short description of what happened.
-
The assistive technology, browser, or device you were using, if you are comfortable sharing that.
We commit to responding within 15 business days of receiving your message. If a fix will take longer than that, our reply will explain what we are doing and when you can expect an update.
7. Continuous improvement
Accessibility is an ongoing practice, not a one-time checkbox. When we add new pages, we check them against WCAG 2.1 AA before publishing. When we receive feedback, we track it and fix issues as soon as we reasonably can. We review this statement at least once a year and update it when there are meaningful changes to the site.
8. Alternative formats
If a page, article, or PDF on this site is not usable for you, contact us at hi@humanse.co and we will provide the content in a different format (for example, a plain-text version or a tagged PDF) at no cost.
